Bjorn & GAINER JAF GP Champions

Bjorn WirdheimBjorn & GAINER team took overall victory in the final Super GT race of the year on Sunday at Fuji Speedway. 2nd place finishes for both drivers in their individual sprint races secured the result and a 2nd JAF Grand Prix title for Bjorn who won it in 2010.

Bjorn finished his Super GT season with a podium in the 22 lap sprint race on the Saturday. After qualifying 2nd, sandwiched in between the two factory Nissan’s, Bjorn lost several positions with a poor start and had to fight his way back into 2nd.

“It’s great to finish the season on a high but I really wasn’t happy after the finish of my race. I nearly stalled the engine at the start and then got taken off into turn-2 as the #48 GT-R forgot to brake for the corner, dropping me to P4. I quickly chased down and passed two cars in front of me and then started closing in on the leader. Initially I was quicker but once the tyres lost their edge there wasn’t much more I could do,” said Bjorn.

“Annoyingly I did drop to P3 towards the end when the pole sitting Nissan passed me with ease on the straight. Their straight line speed today matched the GT500 cars, around 10km/h faster than us and it was incredibly frustrating not being able to fight them even though we outpaced our main Championship rivals.”

The leading Nissan eventually retired with a tyre failure near the end of the race promoting Bjorn back into 2nd.

Bjorn Wirdheim“It’s been a fantastic season and we’ve finished the year on a high. I’m glad to have been part of maintaining GAINER’s strong record in the Super GT series and it’s been a pleasure working with this group of people that make the team. The DIXCEL Mercedes SLS was 100% reliable throughout and in combination with our DUNLOP tyres it was unbeatable on several occasions. Also a special Thank You to my teammate Kazuyuki Hiranaka for a strong performance not forgetting that he singel-handedly developed and picked our race tyres this year.”

Next up for Bjorn is the final round of the World Endurance Championship in Bahrain on the 30th of November where he will be racing the Greaves Motorsport LMP2.
