Greaves Motorsport secured by Kairos Technologies with drivers Bjorn Wirdheim, Gary Hirsch and Jon Lancaster took a spectacular victory in the first round of the European Le Mans Series last weekend at Silverstone. The strong performance included pole position and gave the team an early lead in the Championship.
Jon Lancaster qualified the car on Saturday morning before the race start and managed to claim pole position with a margin of almost half a second.
“We were quick already from the start of the weekend throughout the free practice sessions and knew we had a chance to qualify on the front row. Jon didn’t put a foot wrong and did a really impressive lap that no one could match. We had enough time to check the tyres for longer runs in preparation for the race and our pace was really competitive,” said Bjorn.
The race got underway in dry conditions but with a significantly lower temperature compared to the day before.
“The plan was to have Gary start the race and do a double stint on the same set of tyres, then I would get into the car and finally Jon for the last stint. Gary put up an incredibly strong performance and by the time he left the car for me we were back in the lead.”
“I took over for the third stint and managed to save enough fuel for us to be able to keep myself in the car for a double stint on the same set of tyres. Thanks to the strategy and perfect pitstops I had the lead by some margin. However, we had to make our pitstop during a safety car period and that eliminated that margin. As the tyres wore I picked up a vibration that got worse with the life of the tyres and as a result the lap times dropped significantly towards the end of my second stint. I had just dropped to second when it was time for our final pitstop and for Jon to take over.”
“Jon was in the car for the final 45 minutes and put in a very impressive performance to secure the victory for us. It was an amazing start to our season, better than anyone could have hoped. We’ve now established ourselves as one of the favourite teams this year for the overall win and that brings us extra confidence for the races ahead. A big thank you to my team mates, Greaves Motorsport and our partner Kairos Technologies for delivering a perfect race weekend and result.”
The next round of the 2015 ELMS Series takes place at Imola on the 17th of May. Bjorn’s next race is Round 2 of the Super GT Series at Fuji Speedway on the 3rd of May.
