Bjorn Wirdheim and the GAINER Team took a convincing victory in last weekends season finale of the 2014 Super GT Championship at Twin Ring Motegi. The victory secured the Teams Championship for GAINER and Bjorn and Teammate Katsuyuki Hiranaka took the Runner-Up spot in the drivers championship on count back after finishing on equal points with the Champions.
Bjorn and GAINER took pole position for Sunday’s 250km race with a new course record for Bjorn in Q1. The race took place in sunny conditions with an air temperature of around 12 degrees celsius.
“Coming into the final round 9 points behind the championship leaders we knew that in order to take overall victory we would have to win the race and the leading #4 BMW would have to finish off the podium. We came into the race weekend targeting a perfect weekend and that is just what we achieved,” said Bjorn.
“We confirmed our qualifying and race tyres during testing on Friday and secured pole position for the race in Saturday’s qualifying. We won the race comfortably setting the fastest lap on the way to victory. But the #4 BMW just managed to finish in 3rd position meaning we ended up on the same points in the table and as they had two previous race wins to our one, the drivers title went to them,”
“We claimed the Team Championship which in this case is more impressive as it takes into account laps led, qualifying positions and other similar statistics meaning that overall, our #11 GAINER Dixcel Mercedes SLS were responsible for the strongest performance over the course of the season.”
“It’s the first Championship for GAINER since they joined the championship in 2003 and it’s very well deserved. I would like to thank the GAINER Team, my teammate Katsuyuki, Dixcel, Dunlop and Mercedes HWA for an amazing season.”
