Bjorn and the GAINER Team failed to score points in the first round of the 2015 Super GT Championship held at Okayama. After qualifying 2nd it was a disappointing result after a promising start to the race weekend.
Qualifying was run in dry conditions and Bjorn took the car safely through to Q2 where team mate Katsuyuki Hiranaka was able to secure the 2nd starting position.
“It was difficult to get a reading on our dry tyres during free practice as it was semi-wet. We knew which compound we would have to use for the race but we weren’t sure how competitive that tyre would be in qualifying. The end result was a bit of a surprise to be honest but Katsu really managed to nail the lap and secure a qualifying result we weren’t quite expecting,” said Bjorn.
Warm-up on Sunday morning took place on a wet track and although there wasn’t any more rain before the start of the race it was still wet when the cars lined up on the grid.
“In the free practice the conditions had been similar to what we were up against for the race. We were debating wether we should go for intermediates or dry tyres as the track had dried out very quickly the day before. In the end we decided to play it safe and go for intermediates but there was a miscommunication right before I got into the car on the grid and I was forced to start on slicks,”
“I was optimistic until the start of the race but it soon turned out that the track was drying too slowly for the strategy to work. Katsu took over on a set of intermediates and was competitive but at that point we had lost too much ground. So no points for us unfortunately.”
The next round of the Super GT Series takes place at Fuji Speedway on the 3rd of May. Bjorn’s next race is at Silverstone the 11th of April for Round 1 of the European Le Mans Championship with Greaves Motorsport.
